A Full Time Job
By Ron
Once a year the ads and stores remind us of an event called "Father's
Day." We all have a father. Even if we never met him, we have one.
Even the politically correct families where children have "two mommys"
there was a father involved in the creation of each child whether the
feminists and liberals want to admit it or not. That is the way God
designed His world.
Fathers come in all shapes and sizes. They have different likes and
dislikes as well as different talents and abilities. We do not get to
choose the characteristics we think would make a great father in our
own father.
When we think of Father's Day, we think of home made cards, gifts
wrapped with love instead of professional wrapping expertise, hugs and
kisses. We remember what has been pointed out - that fathers really
pay for their own gift and dinner.
We cannot help but wonder today how many of the beautiful cards with
sentimental verses are really meant from the heart, and how many gifts
are truly given in love instead of with a sense of obligation because
family and friends expect us to remember dad on his special day.
Few fathers actually get to spend full time with their children. When
we remove the hours spent at work, commuting, and sleeping, we realize
that at best fathers only have a part time experience with their
children even though being a father is actually a full time job.
God put it this way in Deuteronomy 6:6-7: "And these words, which I
command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach
them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou
sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou
liest down, and when thou risest up." Full time - no days off!
Some who think of themselves as experts who think they know more that God
tell us that the old fashioned roles of "father" and 'mother" and not only
unnecessary but even damaging to children and their minds.
There is no question that an uninvolved, unloving or abusive father is not
good for any child. However, that is not the type of father God wants
anyone to me. Earthly fathers are to model as best we can the
characteristics of God our Heavenly Father.
We who have had the proper kind of earthly father have much to be thankful
for. I do not know who wrote this, but it is expresses well what those of us
whose earthly fathers have passed on feel on father's day, and always.
Father's Day Poem
You never said I'm leaving
You never said goodbye
And were gone before I new it,
And only God knew why
A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died
In Life I loved you dearly
In death I love you still
In my heart you hold a place,
That no one could ever fill.
It broke my heart to lose you,
But you didn't go alone
For part of me went with you,
The day God took you home.
